Colon Cancer Threaten Women with Diabetes

Recent days, cancer research report frightening news for women with diabetes that have ages more than 55. Double risk of cancer colon is the fact they have to face. Mayo Clinic physician team in the annual meeting of the American Gastroenterological Association, which takes title of Digestive Disease Week 2010, presented this report.

It is proven that diabetes is one of many risk factor of colon cancer. Risk increase to older women. However, it is still uncovering the relation issues for this factor. How it works and why it can affect abnormal cells in colorectal that cause colon cancer.

In 1986, they research 37.695 women who ages 55 – 69. Moreover, the result was shocking because 2361 women are suspected for Type 2 diabetes disorder, and more than 1200 women already suffer colorectal cancer. These results drag physician and scientist led by the mayo clinic to observe diabetes component to some cases of colon cancer. It seems certain people with diabetes are more likely getting colon cancer. However, 80% women who have diabetes are not falling into this group.

A scientist even works with regional pathology laboratories to examine tumor tissue samples from 1200 women diagnosed with colon cancer who also have diabetes. It is strongly believed that combination of three molecularly defined tumors give a contribution to cancer risk factors, mainly for older women. Microsatellite instability (MSI), CpG island methylation (CIMP), and BRAF gene mutations are genetic components that considered being a trigger of higher risk to get this cancer in their lifetime.

That combination of genetic is not only the main risk factor. There are many triggers needed to start colon cancer in people with diabetes like lifestyle and environmental exposure. Even these diseases are very rare, future research is needed to clarify this report in order to improve the quality of patient’s life.
