What are the complications of diabetes?
There are two major types of diabetes occurring in people and both of them lead to a condition referred medically to as hyperglycemia in which there are high blood sugar levels. Hyperglycemia for certain prolonged period of time causes damage to the internal organs. Below are some of the complications to the organs.
Diabetes causes damage to the nerves in the autonomic nervous system and hence can lead to paralysis in the stomach and chronic diarrhea. It also leads to the inability of the heart to control its heart beat after the postural changes.
Diabetes is known to accelerate atherosclerosis, which is the process of formation of fatty plaques which in turn clots the blood vessels and ultimately leading to heart attacks and strokes. Diabetes for any prolonged can also lead to high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels in the blood.
High blood sugar causes damage to the retina of the eye and the presence of it for any prolonged period leads to permanent damage and hence leading to blindness. Diabetes also causes kidney damage often leading to permanent kidney failure.
In addition to the permanent damage by diabetes there are also certain shot lived medical conditions associated with it. Some of them are discussed below. Diabetes leads to slow healing of the wounds and infections. Some of the infections may be extremely dangerous. It reduces the ability of the body to fight against the infections.
