Tata group company Advinus Therapeutics has completed initial trials of a new molecule to treat type II diabetes and is in talks with a few global drugmakers to outlicense the molecule, a top company executive said.

The privately held company has sought the Indian drug regulator’s nod to go ahead with the phase II (a) trial of its molecules in multiple dosages, which essentially means trying it out on a larger number of patients and healthy individuals.

If the molecule is commercialised it could have a significantly higher efficacy and safety profile over the existing drugs available in market to treat the diabetes in the market, Rashmi Barbhaiya, CEO and managing director, Advinus Therapeutics said.

The majority of people with diabetes who had bariatric surgery to lose weight were able to stop taking their diabetes medications, which led to a significant decline in health-care costs, according to a study released Monday.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, looked at 2,235 adults who had the stomach-reducing surgery and who also had Type 2 diabetes, a common form of the disease often associated with weight gain. Six months after surgery, nearly 75% of patients had eliminated their diabetes medications and after two years 84.5% of patients were off medicine.

The study, published in this month’s Archives of Surgery, a Journal of the American Medical Association publication, was funded by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Many patients were able to stop taking their medications almost immediately after surgery and before they’d lost large amounts of weight, backing theories that stomach hormones altered by surgery are better able to control blood glucose levels than weight loss alone.

“Until a successful nonsurgical means for preventing and reversing obesity is developed, bariatric surgery appears to be the only intervention that can result in a sustained reversal of both obesity and Type 2 diabetes in most patients receiving it,” said, Martin Makary, the study’s lead researcher and an associate professor of surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Makary said the majority of patients were able to stop taking other types of medications, such as high-blood pressure pills.

About 86% of the patients, who were covered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield insurance, were on at least one diabetes medication before surgery, with an average of 4.4 medications per patient. About 23% of patients were on insulin.

Neurocrine Biosciences Inc (NBIX.O) has recently signed a deal with Boehringer Ingelheim which is a private German drug manufacturing company. Under the terms of the huge deal Neurocrine has assigned a task of developing drug candidates in order to treat Type 2 diabetes and other related symptoms.

According to Neurocirine, Boehringer Ingelheim is responsible for the development and commercialization of potential GPR 119 agonist products in global market. Therefore these drug maker companies will produce agonist product comprising small molecules which will be used to activate GPR 119 which will induce insulin production.

Actually GPR119 is a G protein-coupled receptor which is present in the digestive system and pancreatic islet belt. Therefore its activation by small molecules of agonist product will induce the production of insulin.

Jon LeCroy, a Hapoalim Securities analyst, added that this great deal between two giant companies has brought substantial financial support for Neurocrine to push its pipeline products ahead with no need of colossal expenditure for this purpose.

This deal really has brought positive prospects for Neurocrine which is expected to receive a huge amount of $10 million as upfront payment and will received $225 million as milestone payment. The purpose of providing such huge sum in upfront payment is to support and facilitate the whole discovery process.

Moreover on Wednesday, Neurocrine signed another deal with Abbott laboratories Inc (ABT.N) for the development and commercialization of its experimental products which will be used to treat endometrioses.

Due to these positive developments the shares of Neurocrine raised up to 8 percent to touch 52-week high of $5.79 in trade on Nasdaq.

A recent study conducted by Kari Hemminki of DKFZ (German Cancer Research Center) over the possible factor of various types of cancers and its link with Type 2 Diabetes. Kari asserted that these are speculations about the relation between cancer incidence and Type 2 diabetes that are revealing the involvement of lower level of male sex hormone in diabetics to enhance the tendency of developing cancer as well.

In all these cases of Type 2 diabetes the risk for developing liver cancer is much higher as compared to cancers of kidneys, small intestine, thyroid and esophagus etc. Swedish National Family Cancer Database is responsible for registering all cases of cancer disease occurred in Sweden since 1985, but to have more detailed study the data from every hospital is also added individually with complete record of cancer cases registered from 1964 to 2007.

For this purpose Australian researchers have taken the first step towards exploring the link between diabetes and genetic factor.

During this unusual experimentation process total 41 females and males have participated voluntarily. Almost half of them have family history of Type 2 diabetes and rest was from healthy family background. In this experiment all participants were asked to take 1,250 calories daily extra than the actual need of their body. This process has taken four weeks and in the end all of them were reported to put on weight and have shown the clear signs of insulin resistance in them. This outcome was expecting but what happened unusual in that experimentation was an extra weight gain of those participants already having family history of Type 2 diabetes. These males and females put on 7.5 pounds which is really greater than 4.8 pounds put on by rest of the participants.
