Women with Gestational Diabetes 5x more likely to develop type 2 diabetes when they get older.

Women with Gestational Diabetes 5x more likely to develop type 2 diabetes when they get older.

When a women gets temporary diabetes during pregnancy its called gestational diabetes. Doctors are now saying that the number of women getting this temporary case of diabetes during pregnancy is rising. Even worse, they now believe that the chances of a women who previous had gestational diabetes are 5 times greater to develop type 2 diabetes later in life.

The numbers are staggering, 50% of women with gestational diabetes developer type 2 diabetes in the 5 years after their pregnancy. 70% will develop type 2 diabetes in the 28 years are their pregnancy. The good news is that only 8% of pregnant women develop gestational diabetes. Those 8% tend to have a family history of diabetes, are out of shape, over weight.

What causes gestational diabetes? It occurs when the mothers glucose level is too high, the baby can get too big and have very low glucose levels are birth (aka hypoglycemia)

The thing that most doctors say will help prevent gestational diabetes, is not being overweight. they now encourage women before they get pregnant to lose weight and get in shape.
