Growing Safety Concerns about Diabetes Drugs & its Unethical Trials

Dr. David Juurlink, the chief of clinical pharmacology and toxicology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center (in Toronto) has urgred FDA to halt the continuing drug trial for diabetes drug rosiglitazone (aka Avandia) as resaerch has proved it as a factor enhancing the proability of cardiovascular diseases in users 30% more than its predecessor pioglitazone (Actos) used in treating diatetes.

Earlier in 2007, FDA issued a couple of warning letter to Avandia drug makers ‘GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)’ to print ‘black box’ wranings on patient’s instruction sheet to inform him the potential side effcte of medicaine regarding heart problems. GSK was also asked to conduct safety trail marketing campaign for public awareness in 14 developed conutries along with newly included developing countries like Pakistan, India, Chile nad Maxico etc.

The subject of Juurlink and Public Citizen call was ‘Thiazolidinedione Intervention in Vitamin D Evaluation’ in which both drugs were tagged for safety concrens. Moreover Thiazolidinediones, Type 2 diabetes drug, is also held responsible for rising the level of several physiological problems like bony fractures, anemia, liver injury and edema etc other than cardiovascular issues, while previous diabetes like metformin and sulfonylurea have proved much more safer way of treament comparatively.

Despite the evident potential side effects of diabetes drug, the strong financial ties among drug producing companies and clinicians and researchers has urged them to defend the drug against growing saftey concrens. Juurlink and Wolfe are expecting more relaible evidence about the safety issues of Avandia as compared to those concluded as a result of ongoing research.
