Neurocrine – Boehringer Deal, A milestone in Diabetes Drug development

Neurocrine Biosciences Inc (NBIX.O) has recently signed a deal with Boehringer Ingelheim which is a private German drug manufacturing company. Under the terms of the huge deal Neurocrine has assigned a task of developing drug candidates in order to treat Type 2 diabetes and other related symptoms.

According to Neurocirine, Boehringer Ingelheim is responsible for the development and commercialization of potential GPR 119 agonist products in global market. Therefore these drug maker companies will produce agonist product comprising small molecules which will be used to activate GPR 119 which will induce insulin production.

Actually GPR119 is a G protein-coupled receptor which is present in the digestive system and pancreatic islet belt. Therefore its activation by small molecules of agonist product will induce the production of insulin.

Jon LeCroy, a Hapoalim Securities analyst, added that this great deal between two giant companies has brought substantial financial support for Neurocrine to push its pipeline products ahead with no need of colossal expenditure for this purpose.

This deal really has brought positive prospects for Neurocrine which is expected to receive a huge amount of $10 million as upfront payment and will received $225 million as milestone payment. The purpose of providing such huge sum in upfront payment is to support and facilitate the whole discovery process.

Moreover on Wednesday, Neurocrine signed another deal with Abbott laboratories Inc (ABT.N) for the development and commercialization of its experimental products which will be used to treat endometrioses.

Due to these positive developments the shares of Neurocrine raised up to 8 percent to touch 52-week high of $5.79 in trade on Nasdaq.
