Patients on Cancer Prostate Drugs Potential to Get Diabetes and Heart Problems

Patients with Cancer Prostate Drugs Potential to Get Diabetes and Heart Problem

FDA is examining the possibility Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) agonist drugs raising the risk of heart attack, which commonly used by patients with prostate cancer. The agency confirms, they collect the data from recent studies, but still unrevealed the relation GnRH agonists with increased risk to a diabetes or heart problems for patients.

FDA also explains GnRH agonists drugs commonly used in hormone treatment against cancer. The treatment is also known as an androgen deprivation therapy. The ability of GnRH agonists to push down certain hormone that boosted cancer growth is used to slow down the development of cancerous cells. It still used in many cancer treatments until now.

However, for some group of people that likely tend having risk on diabetes and cardiovascular disorder, the use of this drug must be monitored. According to FDA, a small percentage increased risk of heart problem or diabetes is shown in patients undergo treatment with these drugs compared with none.

However, the result of those studies still does not expose the relation of cause and side effect. FDA said, the information for drug consumption and dosage, varying definitions for heart disease, limited information on the heart problem triggers and another health problem is not discovered yet.

FDA added, because of the ability to shrink the cancerous cell, patients are suggested to continue the usage of GnRH agonist drugs in the certain amount as doctor’s prescription. GnRH agonists also used in another health treatment for children and women. Moreover, for this case, it is still no specific research to observe this possibility.

GnRH agonist’s drugs are produced by some major laboratories such as Abbott, Endo Pharmaceuticals, Sanofi, Watson, and Pfizer. According to this news, Sanofi and Abbott confirm that they still evaluate the case to determine necessary action. However, almost of them did not release any comment yet.
