Proving the Link between Diabetes and Genetic Disposition

Though long term research have concluded that there is a link between diabetes and patient’s life style including his eating habits but another factor which attracted the attention of researches is family history of a patient. For this purpose Australian researchers have taken the first step towards exploring the link between diabetes and genetic factor.

During this unusual experimentation process total 41 females and males have participated voluntarily. Almost half of them have family history of Type 2 diabetes and rest was from healthy family background. In this experiment all participants were asked to take 1,250 calories daily extra than the actual need of their body. This process has taken four weeks and in the end all of them were reported to put on weight and have shown the clear signs of insulin resistance in them. This outcome was expecting but what happened unusual in that experimentation was an extra weight gain of those participants already having family history of Type 2 diabetes. These males and females put on 7.5 pounds which is really greater than 4.8 pounds put on by rest of the participants.

Not only the extra weight gain but more insulin resistance was found in these participants with family history of diabetes. So in both aspects weight gain and insulin resistance, family history proves its link to diabetes obviously.

According to this detailed study published in journal Diabetologia by Leonie K. Heilbronn, an associate professor of nutritional physiology at University of Adelaide (Australia), Type 2 diabetes involves both factors environmental and genetic. So this study is alarming news for them already having family history of Type 2 diabetes that they must be over conscious about their eating habits because they are more likely to develop this disease as compared to rest of the population.
