Revealing the Relation between Type 2 Diabetes and Cancer Incidence

A recent study conducted by Kari Hemminki of DKFZ (German Cancer Research Center) over the possible factor of various types of cancers and its link with Type 2 Diabetes. This detailed study revealed that people suffering from Types 2 diabetes are prone to develop cancer as compared to rest of the population. Types 2 diabetes is reported to increase the probability of 24 types of cancer incidence particularly the liver cancer and pancreatic cancer. But on the other hand the lower risk of prostrate cancer was also proved through this long term research.

In order to get more concise and solid evidences in proving the link between Type 2 diabetes and cancer incidence, Kari Hemminki undertook a detailed study in Sweden and United States involving 125,126 cases of Swedish citizens. These patients were hospitalized to treat for their diabetic problems. When their cases are analyzed in detailed it was concluded that they have much higher risk of developing one of the 24 types of cancer as compared to general population. Kari asserted that these are speculations about the relation between cancer incidence and Type 2 diabetes that are revealing the involvement of lower level of male sex hormone in diabetics to enhance the tendency of developing cancer as well.

In all these cases of Type 2 diabetes the risk for developing liver cancer is much higher as compared to cancers of kidneys, small intestine, thyroid and esophagus etc. Swedish National Family Cancer Database is responsible for registering all cases of cancer disease occurred in Sweden since 1985, but to have more detailed study the data from every hospital is also added individually with complete record of cancer cases registered from 1964 to 2007.
