Signs Of Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic disorder of carbohydrate metabolism characterized by increased blood sugar level and marked passage of sugars into the urine. This is due to deficient insulin production in the body.

Signs of diabetes mellitus are crucial to diagnose the disease. These signs help to differentiate the diabetes in two types- insulin dependant and insulin non dependant diabetes mellitus. In IDDM, no insulin is secreted from the pancreas. Therefore the insulin levels when tested in laboratory will be low.

The important signs of diabetes mellitus are increased levels of blood glucose as well as in urine which is known as glycosuria, frequent micturition, and raised appetite and excessive thirst. The specific gravity of urine is lowered and there are raised levels of ketone bodies in blood which pass through urine. There is gradual or sudden loss of weight, weakness and fatigue are common characteristics seen in patients with diabetes. Patient’s breath smells sweet and urine smells pungent. Blood pressure of the patient can be raised above the normal values and there is increased heart beat rate and rapid pulse is also present. Fasting glucose level is above the 90 to 130 mg/ dL of blood.

There are common skins disorders like itch, boils, and etc. neuropathic ailments can also occur. Foot drop, no sensation of vibration, heat, cold, numbness, warm hands and feet and inability to control the urine are the other important signs of diabetes. In severe cases, signs of diabetes will include difficult breathing, delirium, delusion and coma in the patients.

Various home kits are available at the pharmacy stores near your homes to check the amount of blood glucose instantly. You can also check it in the urine of the patient. Loss of vision, bad vision, blurs and color blindness are the other signs of diabetes mellitus.
